Sewerage Sector Design and Construction Guidance and Code for Adoption Agreements
Tuesday 26 May 2020
New Sewerage Sector Design and Construction Guidance and Code for Adoption Agreements were implemented in April 2020 by sewerage undertakers operating in England.
The Design and Construction Guidance supersedes Sewers for Adoption 7th Edition and has significantly changed the approach to the adoption of surface water drainage assets and allows for certain Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to be eligible for adoption as a ‘sewer’.
Through our ongoing flood risk and water management work, it is understood that sewerage undertakers are already diverging in their approach to SuDS adoption and have issued their own local guidance. The different interpretations of the new Design and Construction Guidance will have implications for site masterplanning and associated costs of surface water drainage. Adoptable SuDS, compliant with local guidance, should be considered at the outset of the scheme to maximise opportunities and minimise risks as schemes evolve.
PFA Consulting has a strong record in applying the guidance laid out in previous editions of Sewers for Adoption to provide water management solutions for developers across England. We will continue to liaise with sewerage undertakers regarding their current interpretation of the Design and Construction Guidance in order to continue to maximise the opportunities for ‘adoptable’ SuDS in our client’s development sites contributing to planning consents and technical approvals.BACK TO NEWS
