West Parley, Dorset

PFA Consulting provided professional services to Wyatt Homes Ltd in respect of transportation, highways and drainage advice in support of a proposed development comprising residential, retail, office and food store development.

A Transport Assessment, Residential Travel Plan and Flood Risk Assessment was prepared to support a hybrid planning application, together with a package of technical drawings showing preliminary horizontal geometry of the access strategy, on-site roads, strategic link road; and surface and foul water drainage strategies.

The Transport Assessment demonstrated that the site is in a location where, in travel terms, a sustainable development can be achieved.  Through the building of an S-Paramics micro-simulation traffic model of the surrounding highway network an access strategy to demonstrate that safe and suitable access for all users could be achieved was devised in consultation with Dorset Council in its role as the Local Highway Authority.  A balance was achieved in ensuring the junctions and link road were designed with the new community in mind and, whilst attaining the engineering and planning standards, is not engineering led. The rationalisation, scale and alignment of the link road was designed to not prejudice the overall aims of both the Core Strategy and the DC Christchurch Road transport corridor study which includes the Bournemouth International Growth (BIG) programme.

A sustainable drainage strategy, involving the implementation of SuDS was proposed for managing the disposal of surface water runoff from the proposed development on the site in the form of below ground tanks and ‘online’ detention basins to the satisfaction of Dorset Council in its role as the Lead Local Flood Authority.
